The Challenge Of Finding Cosmetics As A Woman Of Color By www.Perfume-mall.net
Recently I read a report by NPD (a leading market research company) that in 2007, three-quarters of women of color who use skin care products find it hard to locate a beauty product that gives them a natural look. I know exactly how these women feel. As a woman of color, I have found that often there are not very many choices. For a long time I wore a pressed powder foundation while I was growing up. These colors were either light and ashy or just too dark and orange for my skin. The biggest challenge seemed to be that there were not enough color selections available that would show up or look pretty on my skin. I always felt like the makeup lines were simply created for the lighter skin tones. Like many young women, I remember my first experiences with makeup. I think these stay with us, both the positive and the negative. I started wearing makeup when I was in the 8th grade, at 13 years old. My Mom took me to the Merle Norman Cosmetics store for a makeover. This was such a fun experience and it made me feel so pretty. I liked the fact that I was getting my own makeup to wear out in public. As I got
older I realized that the color selection was very limited for women with darker skin. When I look at photos of me from the past, the foundations I wore obviously did not match my skin and it really stood out in pictures. Some cosmetic companies are responding to the need and are creating makeup for Black, Hispanic and Asian women. Now there will be more selections of makeup that looks more natural on darker skin tones. It would be nice to have more choices today for makeup. I can remember when our only choices were brands that made my dark skin look too orange. The need for cosmetics for women of color is growing year by year. The 1990 census done nearly ten years ago shows that one of every four Americans is of Non-European descent. So there definitely is a need out there for makeup that suits women of color.
